CONCEPT / RESEARCH / DRAMATURGY
(In)Visa-bility

Welcome. Before you continue, please state the purpose of your visit.

.

(In)Visa-bility is a playful interactive website, and a documentary performance disguised as a visa application. Visitors don’t just read about the work. They have to apply for it. Name, origin, travel history, reason for coming, proof that you’ll leave again. The system listens politely, checks your answers and then decides. Access granted: the next part of the work opens. Access denied: you get a very kind refusal message and a glimpse of everything you won’t see.

.

Behind the game is a real question. An invitation says come. A visa form asks why should we let you? Between the two lies a decision that often ends an artist’s journey before it starts. The website takes the familiar language of bureaucracy, with its checkboxes, error messages and “please try again later”, and turns it into an experience. It is absurd, funny and uncomfortable all at once.

.

The project is co-created by Paweł Bernadowski from Poland, Ting Huyan from China and Hamzeh Abu Alganam from Jordan. It starts from their unequal positions in the same system: Paweł travels freely across the Schengen area, while for Ting and Hamzeh, accepting an invitation from Europe means proving their credibility and their intention to return.

Paweł, Ting and Hamzeh met at ITI Academy Week 2026. The prototype is being developed during Paweł’s research residency in Beijing (November 2026), supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s ReSide programme.
